Cultivating SELF-TRUST in a confusing world

Uncategorized Aug 06, 2021

This blog post is about learning to trust yourself.

NOT MUCH OF A READER? YOU CAN LISTEN TO THE PODCAST VERSION OF THIS BLOG - EPISODE 45 - ON THE RISE, PRIESTESS PODCAST. LISTEN HERE.

Over the past 18 months, I’ve had my eyes well and truly opened and I believe that as a result, my work is becoming richer and more powerful. I’m not here to be right - I’m here to make a fucking difference in anyway that I can.

I believe that when more women trust themselves and their inner wisdom, and follow that guidance, the world will become a fairer, more harmonious balanced place.

When we don’t trust ourselves, we hold ourselves back, we make shitty decisions, and end up dying with our music inside of them. I don’t want this for you.

And not only that, especially now, in the age of fast media, it’s really difficult to know who to trust about anything. The pandemic is a prime example - there are lots of different views out there and when we get swept up in it all, it’s difficult to know what to believe, isn’t it?

But how do we build self-trust in a confusing and uncertain world? How do we know that the oath we're taking is the right one?

I’d always been a bit of a shape-shifter in my early years - I have the ability to see arguments from many sides and as a consequence, a few years ago it was very easy for me to get swept up in things and mould myself and my opinions to fit in with others.

And in some ways, it did me a lot of good. But nonetheless, it's a survival mechanism because I felt I had to fit in or risk being booted out of tribe.

Fitting in vs belonging.

What I know now is that we don’t have to have the same opinions to belong. Belonging is about knowing you are extension of universe. Remember, so long as your decisions aren’t causing intentional harm, you’re allowed to do whatever the fuck you like and think whatever the fuck you think. Liberating, right?

You don’t have to be like everyone else. In fact, those that are outliers of society are always the ones that create change. The world doesn’t need you to fit in - it needs you to be yourself.

Develop your inner guidance system.

We all have it - a deeper sense of whats going on and the next step to take. We must cultivate it, and we do this by forming a deep relationship with our bodies. If something feels off, then it probably is.

We’ve all have red flag moments when we knew instinctively. But women are taught to ignore red flags. The term gaslighting refers to the denial of a person’s reality and can manifest in all relationships, but particularly intimate ones. But the research is clear - it’s rooted in social inequality related to race, nationality, sexual orientation and gender. It affects far more women than men and it begins at an early age. Specifically related to gender, femininity is still associated with irrationality (the word hysteria, coined in the 19th century to describe exaggerated emotional agitation comes from the ancient greek hystera, meaning womb). This bias is often used against victims to erode their reality. We see it in the caricature of the ‘irrational woman’

But our instincts are sacred because they are part of the natural world. Nature is wise. It's powerful because it goes beyond reasoning.

 Question everything.

That said, I do believe in critical-reasoning and listening to all sides of the story, whilst being aware of your own biases and felt-sense response. Just because an idea is mainstream, does not make it untrue. Just because it's a conspiracy does not make it untrue. Learn to dance with nuance. Truth is not absolute. Truth is partial and context dependent.

When it comes to self-trust, know that there’s no black and white. We all have different ways of seeing the world and each are valid and based on a person's lived experience.

Be aware that you could indeed be 'wrong' but that its ok. Trust your instincts. Don't get sucked into absolute truths. Check in with your body and take your time. You don’t need to have the answers right now.
